Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care in St. Andrews

Dementia is an umbrella term for changes in memory, thinking, and behavior that make everyday life harder. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause, accounting for an estimated 60 to 80 percent of cases, and it looks different in every person. That’s why good care at home starts with the person: who they are, what soothes them, and what their days have always looked like.

Picture a caregiver who arrives at the same time each morning, sits down to a familiar breakfast, offers a gentle reminder instead of a correction, and notices when afternoon restlessness starts to build. The goal isn’t to manage a diagnosis. It’s to protect your loved one’s dignity, keep their surroundings comforting and predictable, and give your family room to be family again.

How We Match St. Andrews Families With Memory Caregivers

Every match starts with a conversation, and we’d love to hear your loved one’s story. Before our team makes an introduction, we ask about their history, the habits that comfort them, the times of day that feel hardest, and what your family needs most. That picture guides which caregiver we match with your loved one and how scheduling is coordinated.

The caregivers we refer are independent professionals. We verify each caregiver’s license or certification, complete a Level 2 federal background screening, and confirm that each carries their own liability coverage before we refer them, so you can feel at ease welcoming someone into your home. We also note which caregivers have worked with Alzheimer’s and dementia clients, so experience is part of the match. What a caregiver can do depends on their license: companions offer conversation, errands, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and medication reminders; CNAs and home health aides can also help with bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, and transfers; and licensed nurses handle medication administration, wound care, and assessments. Support can include:

  • A steady, reassuring rhythm for mornings, meals, and bedtime.
  • From CNAs and home health aides, help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, handled with privacy and patience.
  • Medication reminders at the right times, with notes shared with the family.
  • Meal preparation and gentle encouragement to eat and drink throughout the day.
  • Light housekeeping that clears clutter and trip hazards from familiar rooms.
  • Conversation, music, photo albums, and simple activities that bring out a smile.

Whether your family needs a few hours a week to recharge, regular overnight coverage, or around-the-clock care, we’ll help you develop a care plan around the hours that matter most, coordinate scheduling, and advise on changes as needs evolve. There are no hourly minimums.

Memory Care Support for St. Andrews Families

Memory loss can turn ordinary routines into sources of worry. A missed step in the morning, an unfamiliar face, or a long, quiet evening can unsettle someone who once handled those moments without thinking. Calm structure and familiar faces at home go a long way toward easing that strain.

At CareGivers of America, we take great care in matching each client with a caregiver who aims to keep your loved one comfortable, respected, and in charge of as much of their day as possible. They follow your loved one’s lead, keep favorite routines intact, and bring patience to moments that might otherwise turn tense.

Dementia care in St. Andrews, FL through CareGivers of America can include:

Short sentences, a warm tone, and plenty of time to respond help your loved one feel heard instead of rushed. Caregivers learn which cues and topics bring comfort.

Caregivers watch for hazards such as clutter, slippery floors, and unlocked doors, and they flag concerns to the family early.

Steady supervision and a familiar routine reduce the chances of a fall or an unplanned walk out the door.

Regular meals, favorite music, and consistent daily rhythms give each day a reassuring shape.

Caregivers prepare meals your loved one enjoys and offer snacks and drinks through the day, since eating and drinking can slip when memory fades.

We help families understand what they are seeing, plan ahead, and decide when to add hours or change the schedule.

Supporting St. Andrews Families Through the Care Journey

Dementia changes over time, and so do the questions families face. What works this spring may need adjusting by fall. We stay in touch with families and caregivers so small changes get noticed early and the care plan keeps pace.

A free in-home assessment is a good place to begin. A member of our office team can visit your loved one’s home, look at the space with safety in mind, and talk through what kind of support would help. There is no obligation, and you are not billed for the visit.

Fall risk rarely appears overnight. It often starts with small hesitations: a hand reaching for the wall before crossing a room, a slower, more careful trip down the stairs, or a moment of dizziness after standing up too quickly. A recent change in eyesight, a new medication, or a decrease in regular activity can all quietly raise the risk, without an obvious warning sign. For some families, it’s a near-miss that brings the issue into focus; for others, it’s simply noticing that a parent seems less steady than they used to be.

For many families, the tipping point isn’t one big event; it’s the slow realization that keeping track of everything has become a job in itself. A parent might be juggling multiple specialists who don’t communicate with each other, or a recent hospital discharge might come with instructions no one has time to fully follow. Long-distance caregivers often feel this most acutely, trying to manage a loved one’s care from a different city or state with limited visibility into what’s actually happening day to day.

Parkinson’s disease changes daily life in ways most families never feel fully prepared for. For some, it begins with a tremor that makes holding a cup difficult. For others, it starts with slowness in movement or a subtle change in the way someone walks. Whatever form it takes, Parkinson’s is progressive, meaning the challenges grow over time, even when treatment is helping.

Transitions of care are designed to ensure continuity and coordination of health care as clients transfer between different locations or levels of care. An elderly client may need transitional care when leaving one care setting—a nursing home, hospital, assisted living facility, primary care physician, specialist, or home health aide—and moving to another. Senior transition care can occur within settings, between settings, across health states, or between providers.

Reach out to CareGivers of America and let us know you’re interested in learning more about the GUIDE dementia program. The GUIDE is designed to help in exactly this situation. A Care Navigator can connect your loved one to community resources, help coordinate medical appointments, and provide a consistent point of contact for monitoring and support. If your family is managing from a distance, having a dedicated navigator in place can provide meaningful peace of mind. We also encourage families in this situation to reach out to us — our team can help assess whether additional in-home support may be beneficial alongside the GUIDE dementia program. Learn more about how we work with families across South Florida.

The typical process takes two to three weeks from the initial eligibility check to Medicare’s decision. The steps include confirming Medicare eligibility, gathering medical records to confirm the dementia diagnosis, completing virtual caregiver and patient assessments, and submitting the information to Medicare for review. Our partners at MedBetterHealth handle this process and our team can help guide your family through each step.

Home care — the kind CareGivers of America helps arrange — involves a caregiver coming to your loved one’s home to assist with personal care, companionship, daily activities, and safety. The GUIDE dementia program is a Medicare-funded care coordination and support program. It does not involve a caregiver coming to the home, but rather a Care Navigator who helps your family manage the medical and logistical complexity of dementia. Many families benefit from both — home care for hands-on daily support, and the GUIDE program for coordination, education, and caregiver respite. Learn more about our dementia care services in South Florida.

No. The GUIDE dementia program adds support on top of your existing Medicare coverage. Your loved one can continue seeing any doctor, specialist, or hospital that accepts Medicare. Nothing changes with your current plan — the GUIDE model simply layers in a Care Navigator, personalized care planning, caregiver training, and respite support alongside it.

Yes. There is no cost to enroll in the GUIDE dementia program and no cost-sharing for the services it provides. The program is funded through Medicare, so eligible participants receive support at no out-of-pocket expense. Participation is also completely voluntary — you can stop at any time and it will not affect your other Medicare benefits.

Home care typically refers to any type of care provided in the patient’s home, but can also refer to assistance provided at an assisted living facility, rehab setting or even bedside at a hospital.

A long-term care policy, or a life insurance policy with long-term care benefits, can help pay for the cost of in-home care.

These policies come in all different types and we are happy to help you figure out what your policy includes. Let our experts help you maximize the benefits you’ve already paid for! Call us for a no-obligation consultation.

The cost of care is determined by the hours and specific skills required to meet your loved one’s needs.

Home care can be covered by long term care insurance policies or other third-party payor sources such as Veterans’ Benefits, Union Benefits, Medicaid, or certain Medicare Advantage plans.

Working with a licensed nurse registry can provide you with peace of mind that a private aide cannot. One key advantage is that we can help arrange backup care when needed.

Another reason to work with a home healthcare agency or licensed nurse registry is that if you work with an aide privately, you may be responsible for payroll and withholding taxes, caregiver vetting and screening, as well as for ensuring that you or the caregiver carries sufficient liability insurance. By working with us, you would not have to worry about any of these. CareGivers of America verifies each caregiver’s license or certification, completes a Level 2 federal background screening, and confirms the caregiver carries their own liability coverage before we refer them. Caregivers we refer are independent contractors who invoice for their own services in an IRS-compliant manner that avoids your being responsible for payroll obligations and tax withholding.

Every home aide or nursing assistant we work with is fully licensed, professionally insured and undergoes a complete federal background check. We also keep close track of which caregivers have experience with dementia or Alzheimer’s patients, as well as other skills such as cooking or language proficiencies.

We’ll inquire about your health, evaluate the physical environment for potential risks, and then help you create a care plan customized to your needs.

There is no obligation to receive care after an assessment, and you will not be billed for the visit; it is a courtesy on our part to help ensure the safety of our valued neighbors.

Yes, along with other services, caregivers can provide transportation and escort clients to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, events, to run errands, etc.

In addition to providing in-home care, our network of caregivers can travel to assisted living facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or any other location the client needs.

We work with a network of RNs (registered nurses) and LPNs (licensed practical nurses) who can provide in-home specialized nursing services, such as wound care, medication management and assessments in addition to the general caregiver services we provide.

The caregivers we refer do not provide hospice or palliative care at CareGivers of America. But, at CareGivers of America, we are happy to offer referrals of caregivers who can provide long-term in-home health services for you or a loved one.

CareGivers of America can refer caregivers who provide 24-hour services, so overnight care can be made available. Caregivers can work at any time that your loved one needs in-home assistance and we are available 24/7 by phone for support and to answer any questions you may have.

CareGivers of America does not accept Medicare or general health insurance for private duty care, but we do work with Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI), which may reimburse some or all of the costs associated with home care—especially for those needing help with daily activities or living with conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Prior to being eligible to be referred to a family, all caregivers must complete a thorough FBI-2 background check. They are also all CPR-certified and licensed to provide in-home care. Caregivers can also be CNAs with their HHA (home health aide) certification as well as licensed RNs and LPNs. All caregivers hold certifications and licensing authorizing them to provide in-home health care. We will only refer a qualified and experienced caregiver to you and your loved ones.
